Additional Information

In the late 1870s, many young teachers traveled West to earn money and make a new life for themselves, despite the schools being inadequate at best. Some returned home, unable to endure the hardships of prairie life, but others were more committed to their work. Sarah Jane Price stayed, braving the rough conditions of the West. Written by Newbery Honor Author Jim Murphy, this is Sarah Jane Price's story.

Yet another dear America book I've read repeatedly over the years, but I don't think this one holds up as well as the others. Sarah Jane wants more than anything to stay in broken bow. Her beloved father is dead and she will stop at nothing to stay out of an orphanage. Then she gets an idea. She can teach! but sarah has never taught and has no idea what she's up against or what the schoolhouse will look like. Can she prove herself? Can she stay in broken bow?
I'm not sure why I don't like this as much as the others. I guess it just isn't as interesting. it's a good book, it's just not great.
First and foremost, "My Face to the Wind" is a girl's adventure story. The heroine begins the story in a terrible state. Her father has just died and she is all alone in a small Nebraska pioneer settlement. How will the protagonist survive and move forward? All the classic elements of an adventure story. What takes this story into the realm of historical fiction is its 1880's Nebraska setting. Although I am no historical expert on pioneer life, the details felt right. But remember this book is more girl's adventure story than a careful recreation of pioneer life. "My Face to the Wind" is well written and both my nine year old daughter and myself enjoyed the book. Recommended.

When her father, a professional school teacher, dies unexpectedly from a plague that sweeps through the new town, Sarah Jane Price finds herself completely alone and orphaned. Although the lady she boards with is kind and solicitous, she is eager to be rid of Sarah Jane and considers it her "Christian duty" to ship the young girl off to an orphanage, where she will perform hard labor six days out of the week and wear herself thin with weak meals and little love. Sarah rebels against this plan and audaciously suggests that she replace her deceased father as the new school teacher - she has, she argues, the proper credentials and she is, she lies, of the appropriate age.

This novel follows closely the trials she faces. She is lonely, without a father or family, and she is despised by many of the townspeople who do not believe she is "humble" enough, and that a woman should not be a teacher. Many of her students refuse... Read more
