These are good enough quality chisels for the money. I took a basic joinery class and they had the Marples chisels sharpened very well which lasted through a full set of dados, rabbets, stopped dado, dovetails, and mortise/tenons. These are comparable. Sharpen them properly and don't expect them to take abuse and you will find they are pleasant to work with. However, they are not of the same quality as you will get from more expensive chisels. This is going to be a fact with pretty much every tool you buy in my experience. Sometimes you are paying for a name, but you are also paying for a level of quality or finish. Make no mistake, you will spend a good amount of time flattening and sharpening these chisels out of the box to make them suitably sharp for woodworking, but I think once you do they are fine for the hobbyist to use regularly. Once they are sharp, I take a few strokes after each set of joints on my leather strop just to keep a fine edge. Takes maybe 2 minutes by hand.
these may not be Lie-Nielsen, but they really are pretty good. And for the price they are REALLY good.
They aren't "Cadillacs" of chisels but they aren't crud either. Yes, you will need to do some tuning up when you get them (remove the lacquer, flatten the backs, hone the bevel, cut yourself...) so grab a cuppa and enjoy the bench time. Some folks dont like the finish on the handles. I dont have a problem with them but its easily removed. I would have given them a 5 but one of them had a wicked burr on them and when taking off the lacquer cut my thumb open good so be careful. Otherwise very good starter set for your garage wood shop.
PS they dont come in a fancy wood box so make your own or buy a tool roll.
