By 1800, the Spanish outpost of Natchitoches, on the Louisiana-Texas frontier, was a magnet drawing adventurers and settlers from most of the Western world. â€œAngloâ€ Americans, Irish and English immigrants, European continentals, Tejanos, Canadians, Caribbean refugees, and more lived cheek by jowl with the old French, Spanish, African, and Native American families who had peopled the outpost throughout the 1700s.
