Even though it was made in the mid 60s, to me this movie as an above average example of a 50s monster movie (plus it's in color). The script is fairly literate, Anthony Eisley makes a stalwart, but not always right, leader of a group isolated on an island, and Walter Sande makes a great wise old doctor/scientist. Even Mamie van Doren plays her role of nurse pretty straight. The happenings have a mysterious quality about them that maintains tension. Admittedly, people wander off into danger perhaps a little too often, but hey, it's a thriller! And too much time is spent off the island with the higher commanders, who mostly seem to be acted by amateurs...Still, if you like 50s monster movies, I recommend this movie.
This movie is an odd mix, with a good story but poor script, good acting by half the cast, bad by the other half, apparently decent production values but bad special effects. It's based on a novel by Murray Leinster, one of the most popular sci-fi writers of the 1950s & '60s, whose work inspired Irwin Allen's The Time Tunnel and The Land of The Giants.

The story follows the same formula as The Thing and It The Terror from Beyond Space - about a group of people terrorized by a monster in an isolated location - in this case an island. The monster was brought on a plane from Antarctica.

The good actors here include Billy Gray (The Day The Earth Stood Still, On Moonlight Bay, Father Knows Best) and Bobby Van (The Affairs of Dobie Gillis, Lost Horizon). They both have some good scenes and add entertainment value to a film that otherwise might be compared to the corniest 1950s B movies.

I've always remembered this film from my childhood due to the scene... Read more
There are two versions with good print quality, this one and the old VHS from Paragon. That's important because it is a grainy film anyway.
