I first read this while serving in Eastern Kentucky with the US Public Health Service. Unfortunately, this once beautiful part of our country in the 18th century is no more. Strip mining has gouged the hillsides and forests.Poverty level enormous. That was in 1964. While viewing a movie of the same area in the early 1990s, I did not see much different.Mr.Caudill describes how things reached this state of being quite accurately.Things will be getting worse if the coal industry shows further decline via the EPA, even though coal mining now is much more a cleaner operation than years ago..An excellent book. Unfortunately I understand Mr. Caudill suffered from depression and took his own life some years ago.
Excellent book, well written and with an honest, unromantic, unvarnished honesty. My mother's side of my family are from the Cumberland plateau for over 200 years. I've heard stories like in this book growing up my whole life. My mom grew up in one of those coal camps during the Great Depression and it was tough, but so was my mom and everyone else. My grandmother was smart enough to send my mom and her sister away to live with relatives in their teens. My mom always had an affection for the mountains, and the culture never left her. Her families stories and the stories in this book are both wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time. Wonderful book, really gives you a sense of the place and its people.
Night Comes to the Cumberlands is a well presented paper backed reprint of a 1963 publication and along with photographs not previously printed this is a welcome resource and highly recommended.
A 2001 reprint of this magnificent expose of the folly of the unbridled environmental violence that accompanied the Boom and Bust periods of coal mining in the once beautiful Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky, USA. The author has obviously been deeply dedicated to the project and has documented the raw human disaster that befell the population of these remote communities. If you ever had any questions about the merits of coal mining and the monsters who profit from this venture, this is the book to read. Having come from an area in Australia destroyed by coal mining in the 1950's it is interesting to see that the end result of this industry does not change from one country to another. The fact that the mined area degrades all around and influences the remaining population for decades after... Read more
