No One Needs to Know turned out to be quite different than I'd expected. The description makes it sounds like this is just Olivia' story, but we really have alternating chapters from Olivia's and Zoey's POVs. This made me really happy, because, the synopsis makes it out to be like it's Olivia's decision whether Zoey stays with her brother or goes out with her, when that's obviously not for Olivia but for Zoey to decide. And the synopsis also doesn't do Zoey and Olivia's relationship justice: they're not just rivals for Liam's attention: they go to the same school, and they have some history that makes them, well, not quite BFFs. That means we had a really intriguing set-up, to add to love triangle with boy/girl twins that I loved; making for a fascinating premise.
But even though I loved the set-up, the story just isn't developed enough for me to actually love this book. The characters are pretty stereotypical: Olivia is the rich popular girl, and Zoey is the outcast from...
Love triangles and cheating are my biggest turn-off in books. No One Needs to Know had a lot stacked against it before I even turned to the first page. But I was completely shocked and proven absolutely wrong. Love triangles can work whenever authors handle them with finesse like Amanda Grace did. I was absolutely blown away by this book. I loved it!
The book switches back and forth between Olivia and Zoey. I daresay if Liam's point of view had been used, I'd be less enthusiastic because of the circumstances. But I really grew close to the characters of Olivia and Zoey. I was skeptical about Olivia at first. It seemed like she was going to be a tangle of stereotypes, but like the rest of this book, she surprised me. It was really easy to root for Olivia and the relationship forming between her and Zoey.
No One Needs to Know was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't ready to let go whenever I finished this book. It's definitely one that I could see myself reading over...
I've enjoyed books by Mandy Hubbard (Amanda Grace is a psuedonym) and I try to read and review as much LGBTQ+ YA fiction as possible. But I must admit, I found the synopsis of NO ONE NEEDS TO KNOW somewhat off-putting. Basically, Olivia falls for Zoey, who is dating her twin brother Liam. I am not a fan of cheating stories, and it seemed like it would be a huge betrayal.
Surprisingly, Grace pulled it off. The attraction between the girls grew in a subtle, organic way and there wasn't crazy hurtful drama. I would've preferred no cheating at all, but I didn't find it terrible.
When NO ONE NEEDS TO KNOW starts, Zoey and Olivia are fiercely arguing with each other after being paired together for a school project. Olivia thinks Zoey always believes the worst of people, that they remember and care deeply about the rumors about her. Zoey thinks Olivia is a mean girl, along with her best friend. As the story goes on, both girls learn how wrong their impressions...
