Norman Norell (1900â€“1972)â€”the first American designer to employ couture techniques, refined workmanship, and luxurious fabricsâ€”made dresses, coats, and suits that critics deemed â€œthe equal of Paris,â€ earning him the sobriquet â€œthe American Balenciagaâ€ and forever changing perceptions about New Yorkâ€™s Seventh Avenue garment industry.

Clients included Lauren Bacall, Babe Paley, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, Marilyn Monroe, and Lady Bird Johnson. Norell was the first thoroughly modern American designerâ€”and his dresses are still prized by stylish women today.
