Notes on Teaching delivers utterly relevant guidance, lucid explanatory commentary, and helpful examples that will help anyone become a better teacher. Like its siblings in the Notes On series (Notes on Directing and Notes on Cooking), the book’s clear, accessible, and practical insights into the art and craft of teaching invoke the spirit of Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style and Sun Tsu’s The Art of War, giving its audience the information they need in the way they want it: brief, efficient, direct. The notes are designed to provoke strong reactions--either in agreement or dissent--that will guide anyone who teaches to acknowledge, test, and debate their own beliefs. By turns provocative, funny, and unerringly blunt (#166 “Steer clear of the grumblers”), the authors understand that HOW the information is delivered is as valuable as the information itself. The book's afterword is by Taylor Mali, a teacher and one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement, famous for his poem, "What Teachers Make." Notes on Teaching is endorsed by: Wendy Kopp, Founder, Teach for America. Geoffrey Canada, President and CEO of Harlem Children's Zone. Michael Thompson, PhD., co-author of Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Lives of Boys and The Pressured Child. This book provides real insight on teaching and learning--anyone who helps people learn, whether in a school, a business, or a family, would be wise to read it. It reads briskly but gives real insight. The author has taught all over the world--in the US, in China, in Brazil, and in Spain--and brings from her experience real lessons in what it means to give skills to another. At a time when there is a national debate about how to reward teachers and whether some are doing an inadequate job, we haven't actually taken the steps to figure out exactly what it is that makes a good teacher good. Moreover, we have been operating under the assumption that some people are just good at teaching naturally, and others are not. Hendricks's book itself is a good teacher, showing readers what it means to open the mind of another, and how to tell if you're reaching someone.
I think the book is excellent -- teachers will love it, but CEOs, foreman, fathers, and managers should all be reading...
These notes are helpful reminders for veteran teachers and instructive gems for those new to teaching. I bought a copy of the book last year for a new teacher I was mentoring, and it was a really valuable jumping off point for us as we discussed his first year in teaching. I plan to buy another for my new "mentee" this coming year! I love the way you can grab the book and just read a few notes to help energize any given day of teaching or reflect on the practices that you bring to the table. As a parent of a young school-age child, it's also made me much more aware of the environment that my child is in every day as he interacts with his teacher. I found the book very helpful in selecting a school as it gave me so many new ways to observe a classroom and helped me generate really specific questions. I highly recommend it.
A great read for teachers on summer vacation! Notes on Teaching is an insightful, witty, practical guide for teachers.
Not sure what to do for your first class meeting? Want a refresher on setting expectations? Need new ideas for classroom staging? Notes on Teaching has it all! The book offers classic advice on planning and preparation: Note #16: Come prepared Note #17: Don't over-prepare Note #18: Prepare to be unprepared. My favorite note? #8: Love them.
You can't go wrong with this book, even veteran teachers can gain something from these helpful reminders.
I highly recommend it!
