Additional Information

Led by turntable wizard/guitarist/composer Otomo Yoshihide, the fast and furious Ground Zero combine creative juxtapositions and oddball sampling with the raw power of a live six-piece band. Null & Void jumpcuts from samples of Chinese flutes and German military rhythms to ridiculous out-of-context media bites to Funhouse style guitar/sax explosions. It's a hysterical and unbelievably wild ride. Null & Void is this excellent Tokyo group's first American release, and features a new Ground Zero line-up, including the amazing young guitarist Uchihashi Kazuhisa, from the band Altered States. The album also features haunting themes from Otomo's soundtrack to the award-winning Chinese film, The Blue Kite (directed by Tian Zhuang Zhuang).

One of the things I like most about this release, not being familiar with some of his other work, is the extensive use of sampled voices to create "music." The voices are in Japanese, Chinese, and English (probably explaining the International titled songs) and weave together on songs such as TV-Q missile to create a provacative collage. Elsewhere, as on the Movie tracks, the piercing noise and voices recede into the background. Meanwhile, sampled violin and chinese flute emerge with electronics, creating howling, desolate soundscapes used by Tian Zhuang Zhuang for his film, The Blue Kite. All this electronic and turntable wizardry is fleshed out by a 6-piece band, including Altered States' Guitarist Uchihashi Kazuhisa on guitar, among others... Read more
