Most of the problems experienced by trumpet players stem from a lack of routine development through consistent, balanced daily practice. A systematic approach is needed to daily practice. Using books that every serious minded practicing trumpet player should own, Claude Gordon offers a plan to help you develop the power, endurance, sound, control and range required of the contemporary professional trumpet player.

In addition to the pedal tone, high range and flexibility routines Claude has written into the book's fifty-two lessons, you will also need the following books to follow the routines outlined: Technical Studies by Herbert L. Clarke; Characteristic Studies by Herbert L. Clarke; Arban's Complete Conservatory Method by J.B. Arban; Saint-Jacome's Grand Method; Lip Flexibility on the Trumpet by Walter M. Smith and Advanced Lip Flexibilities for Trumpet by Charles Colin.

Be prepared to make the time required to practice the routines as prescribed and you... Read more
A book on trumpet playing can NEVER replace a good trumpet teacher...but this book IS a great trumpet teacher! Books on how to play trumpet are typically concise to say the least, with a minimum of words accompanying the exercises.

I remember as a very young student blowing through Brubank, Arban, Clarke, Collins and Saint Jacome - WITH a teacher , and never really stopping to think WHY I was practicing what I was practicing. I just remember it was often tedious - I had no way of registering progress, which is what most trumpet players want...

Gordon doesn't really spoon feed you his philosophy in words either, but his minimalist introduction sort of says it all and is very personal. Over the few months I have spent with this book I have found that by doing the exercises he prescribes daily, my body registers the changes and progress and understands where he is heading!

Trusting the Gordon knew what the heck he was doing I have thus added two octaves... Read more
As an amateur trumpet player who reached grade five before returning to playing in my late twenties, I was very frustrated at the lack of progress I seemed to be making blasting through the Arban and wearing myslef out, so I invested in this to give me guidence on warm ups and routines. Without a doubt it has made me a better player, and I noticed great progress even after the first few weeks, with pedal tones improving my tone and range (I can now get a super G) and the prescribed excercises from other books improving my technique. I am pleased with the routine it has given me, and also the awareness of what I am developing and the different things to focus on. My one word of warning is that this is really for a developing professional or truely dedicated student with lots of time, and to use it as is fully prescribed needs AT LEAST TWO HOURS A DAY, NOT INCLUDING A MANDATORY HOURS GAP BETWEEN THE TWO SECTIONS. To properly 'rest as much as you play', you probably need more like three... Read more
