They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. But sometimes, under extreme circumstances, it's exactly that which kills you that makes you stronger. And faster. And a member to a new, elite race of zombies.
Armed with a current address for his biological grandfather and a slightly unusual, yet loyal best friend, Doyle Hawthorne sets out to discover the truth about his past. But answers don't come easily, and the closer Doyle arrives to his destination, the more confusing things become. Disturbing alterations to his physical appearance as well as to his personality flicker on and off as Doyle searches for a logical explanation.
Despite the increasing severity of these uncontrolled flare-ups, Doyle is determined to keep his first date with Addy - a beautiful, young woman he has met upon his arrival into town. After narrowly subduing his raging impulses, Doyle quickly decides not even death itself can keep him from her. Unfortunately, he is about to test that theory.
Once initiated, nothing can alter the process of shading - the term given to the three distinct phases of becoming a higher classification of zombie, commonly referred to as "royals". Doyle must learn to control his tendency toward violence as well as his newfound royal powers if there is any chance of protecting those he loves from a mad scientist, the government, the colony of royals, and most importantly... himself.

This is NOT your usual zombie story--and I loved that about this book. Instead of being infected, college student Doyal finds out being a zombie is in his genes. On a quest to meet his biological grandfather, Doyal and his best friend, Chuck take off on a road trip. What was meant as a quick and harmless getaway soon becomes full of strange symptoms for Doyal. Nightmares, new food cravings, two girls, a diner and more have his head spinning. I love the bond these two guys share as best friends. Chuck is the guy everyone wants to be friends with! Wealthy, funny, a bit cocky and oh so loyal--I loved him! I also loved the relationship (for better terms) he and Kai share, it's a story of when a playboy meets Emo girl and they find themselves questioning what they got themselves into. I would have loved to see more of a build up between Doyal and Addie. They fell helplessly in love, yet they had met only twice for a short amount of time. I'm super excited so see where the...

The author sucked me in with the characters and the shroud of mystery of the plot. The dialogue was humorous between Doyle and Chuck, two best friends who have no idea what they are walking into. The pace of the action is just right and the scenes are visual and engrossing.
The twists and turns make the plot that much better. It’s not your typical zombie story, perhaps book two will shift more to a zombie feel, but that isn’t necessary for me. It was the mixture of friendship, romance, action, comedy, and intrigue that are the true features of the tale. No spoilers from me, I just can't ruin such a good story for you.
I like the cover art too.
