Caught a 39inch, 40lb Blue catfish, reel worked like a charm, drag was awesome!
I fish off the Seawall in Tampa Bay. I often like to go for the big sharks that come through in the summer. If i use conventional reels I have to kayak the bait out. I like to have a spinning reel option for when i just want to cast out. This reel is large enough to hold enough line at the higher weight required and the bait feeder system works similar to the system on the conventional reel. It allows you to set your pole down and wait for the big strike without having to open the bale or turn the drag way down. Then once you get a strike on click engages the the main drag precisely where you set it. In terms of fighting, the drag is smooth and it has plenty of power. It landed a 180 lb Bull Shark with no problem and I am sure it can go bigger. I am looking forward to this upcoming season and was actually here to buy some smaller avengers to replace my other reels. I will be buying 2 each of the ABF 20s and 40s. I love the ABF system and the reels are very durable for saltwater...
I currently own two ABF 20a, one ABF 30 and one ABF 65. These are great reels for the money. I use the 20's with an ultralight set up for both large mouth bass and trout fishing, the 30 for catfish and steelhead and the 65 for striper and bluefish surf-casting.
The first reel I bought was the 20 and with the back up spool I keep one loaded with 10lb braid and one with 2 or 4 lb mono. I have been fishing this one for over 2 years and have had zero problems. I like it so much that I bought my 7 year old son one and coupled it with a 4'6" Shakespeare micro ultralight. Total set up cost me ~$65 and it's a combo he will be able to use for years.
The ABF 30 was my "bigger" real for fishing the tributaries of Lake Erie during steelhead season when I want to float some egg sacs. In 2015 we decided to rent a house on Cape Cod. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a combo for saltwater because I was only going to be there 1 week. So I took the second spool...
