NEVER BEFORE RELEASED BROADCAST OF EARLY GREEN DAY PERFORMANCE By the release of their second album Kerplunk, Green Day had built up a considerable cult following and a reputation as one of the East Bay s finest punk bands, selling over 50,000 copies in the US alone and touring extensively throughout 1992 and 1993. Their final release before the major label success of Dookie, Kerplunk represented the band on the cusp of enormous global fame and recognition. It was during their tour in support of Kerplunk that the band played an in-house set on May 28th at legendary New Jersey station WFMU FM, which was broadcast live. With a song list predominately made up of tracks from their first two albums and early EPs, the performance, featured in full on this CD, offers a perfect retrospective of their early career. An intimate event without an audience, save for DJs and technicians, the band still play in a typically exhilarating manner for close to 70 minutes, during which, in addition to their own multiple compositions, covers of numbers originally by fellow local bands Operation Ivy and Fifteen are included. In the near 20 years since this startling performance took place, Green Day have become among the finest Rock bands ever to emerge and now reside in the same league as greats like U2, Queen or Metallica, but listening to this recording now, helps to remember that Green Day have always been great, and it s looking unlikely that this status will slip anytime soon.
