Additional Information

Elliot Rosenzweig, a wealthy Chicago philanthropist, is attending opening night at the opera.  Ben Solomon, a retired Polish immigrant, makes his way through the crowd and shoves a gun in Rosenzweig's face, denouncing him as former SS officer, Otto Piatek.   Solomon is blind-sided, knocked to the floor and taken away.  Rosenzweig uses his enormous influence to get Solomon released from jail, but Solomon commences a relentless pursuit to bring Rosenzweig before the courts to answer for war crimes.  Solomon finds a young attorney, Catherine Lockhart, to whom he recounts his family's struggles and heroisms during the war, revealing to her that he and Piatek grew up as brothers in the same household.

Once We Were Brothers is a contemporary legal thriller and a poignant look back into the lives of small town Poland during World War II.

The author, Ronald H. Balson, is a Chicago trial attorney, an educator and writer.  His practice has taken him to several international venues, including villages in Poland which have inspired this novel.

This book had promise, but sadly there are simply too many unrealistic moments liberally utilized in the plot.
1. To start, an otherwise unremarkable retired man named Ben Solomon accuses a wealthy businessman and generous benefactor, Eliot Rosensweig of hiding his identity as a Nazi WW II criminal. Naturally, the benefactor denies the charges and his accuser is dismissed as a delusional old man. (Spoiler: Anyone think a 400 page book will conclude with the old man is wrong??)
2. Luckily, Ben finds an audience in a lawyer, Catherine who has the patience to listen to Ben tell a very lengthy and incredibly detailed story that certainly expands the historical aspect, but seriously - how could anyone opt to spend day after day, hour after hour as Ben tells his story with most of the details totally irrelevant
3. At the outset, Catherine tells Ben she needs evidence of the theft of his family's jewelry and other valuables, but eventually that part of the story just falls... Read more
Ronald H. Balson came up with a great idea for a novel when he wrote "Once We Were Brothers." The most prominent civic and arts leader in Chicago has been accused by a Holocaust survivor of being a Nazi who stole valuable belongings from a Jewish family. The concept of a war criminal becoming a beloved member of Chicago society is a great one with ample opportunity for story telling.

Balson starts out well enough with a dramatic encounter between the alleged criminal and a member of the family victimized by the Nazi following the outbreak of World War II. There's plenty of intrigue and much uncertainty about the validity of the claims.

The author adds to the story by bringing in a fallen lawyer who grudgingly agrees to represent the claimant. But Balson errs when he decides to allow the survivor to tell the entire story of the Jewish family's travails under the Nazi control in endlessly long stories. He does this through repeated meetings with the... Read more
I really really wanted to like this book, I just couldn't do it. The writing left much to be desired. It was stiff and very forced. Each chapter had a structure. Lawyer is too busy for civil case. Hears story anyway. Gets frustrated with how long it's taking. Okay I'll listen, but hurry up. Times up. Let's meet in two days. Please hurry up. Etc etc.... I was shocked to encounter this lack of creativity and emotion in a book that came so highly rated!! Don't get me wrong I enjoyed reading it but it wasn't something I had trouble putting down and it certainly is a book I will ever pick up again. The point of view of the war from a Polish perspective was very interesting but that alone could not save this juvenile book. I would only recommend this book to a friend that wouldn't have to pay for it and wanted something to read on a plane. All in all I am disappointed, probably wouldn't choose this author again.
