Additional Information

We all make many ethical choices, small and large, every day. Should we give money to that homeless person? Should we shade the truth to protect someone else's feelings? Should we endanger ourselves by chasing that purse-snatcher? A first-year college composition course devoted to critical thinking and writing presents an ideal opportunity for students to reflect on what goes into making such decisions, and to refine their own understanding of what constitutes ethical action. The first reader to tap into this opportunity, Open Questions presents a wide variety of perspectives on profound ethical issues, along with a unique method of approaching those issues based on careful listening, analytic thinking, and persuasive writing.

This anthology was the text for a Freshman Composition course I took in 2005. It is obviously edited to be a course textbook. There are separate prefaces for student and instructor. It would serve equally well as an English Comp. or an Ethics text. Each of the pieces has some ethical question at its center. There are accompanying questions for interested students / instructors.

There is a fairly wide variety of styles represented. There is the classic essay, excerpts from larger works, a fine piece of oral history by Studs Terkel, a bit of poetry, even a few cartoons. There are some classical pieces, notably King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and Orwell's "Politics and the English Language". Balanced with that are relatively unknown works that catch one off-balance with their truth, beauty, pathos.

Many of the pieces are startling in their relevance. Sallie Tisdale's "We Do Abortions Here" should be required reading for anyone who wants to participate... Read more
Open Questions wasn't so much 'Open Questions' as an ideological how to masquerading as an instructional on critical thinking. It used stereotypical situations with a slanted view that forced readers towards a certain spectrum of conclusions rather than an approach that would open real dialogue and guide the reader in exploring their own thoughts and the world around them in an objective and revelatory way. If you are looking for a book that does what the title teases look elsewhere.
Is exactly as described. Was delivered earlier then originally stated which is nice. I was able to finish class with a passing grade.
