Additional Information

This authorized biography of the contemporary Taoist expert Wang Liping (1949 -) tells the true story of his apprenticeship in Taoist wizardry, as well as Taoist principles and secrets of inner transformation.

The 18th-generation transmitter of Dragon Gate Taoism, Wang Liping is heir to a tradition of esoteric knowledge and practice accumulated and refined over eleven centuries. This is the first English translation by noted writer Thomas Cleary of the authorized biography by two longtime disciples of this living master of the Dragon Gate branch of the Complete Reality school of Taoism, which integrated Buddhism and Confucianism into a comprehensive new form of Taoism.

I bought this book amidst gathering information on the Quanzhen and Longmen sects of Taoism. Of the five books I purchased, this one was by far the most painful read. I forced myself through the first half of the book telling myself that it would be a worthwhile read. Sadly by 2/3rd of the book, I lost all interest.

I believe in large part, my objection has to do with the way the book is written. From the introduction, it appears to be compiled by Wang Liping's two students, who on almost every page go on to praise their teacher for overcoming all sorts of difficulties during his training. This makes the read very predictable and very dry.
1. Taoist Wizards present a difficult training regimen
2. Wang Liping because of his superior personality perseveres
3. Taoist Wizards are delighted, because Wang Liping is clearly the chosen one

This is a biography of Master Wang Liping written by two of his longtime students. The story is simply amazing. Highly recommended.

Other reviewers made some negative remarks about the literary style, especially because it gives the impression that every method the master learned from his teachers came to fruition immediately and surely. Since the authors obviously have tremendous respect for their master, it is not surprising that they didn't want to emphasize his weaknesses in their biography of him. If we read with that in mind we can more easily appreciate the magnitude of the struggle in the story this book narrates.
I loved it. If you enjoy spirituality and resonate with Taoism but don't like rule-based books or non-fiction styled then narrative form is a great way to deepen understanding and encourage your practice. This book 'shows' the path and hardships a student is taken through to develop his self.

Another recommendation of a student training to be a master story is Raymond E Feist's, The Magician.
