I sacrificed by Sea to Summit rain cover to my boyfriend because he didn't want a yellow pack cover. I didn't either but I wasn't going to be the unreasonable one about it. So I gave him my orange STS one and got this high-visibility yellow one in the mail. It's not as good as the Sea to Summit cover.
1) This does not pack down nearly as small as the STS, fabric is much thicker (you think that might be better? It's not, read the next point) and it takes up more room in my backpack for bicycle commuting than I'd prefer.
2) The fabric apparently sucks. When I put my rain covers on my backpack I usually do it outside next to my bike, on the asphalt/concrete. Typically I have my backpack back side down and put the cover on from the bottom, then left it up right and put it over the top, then flip it onto the outside of the pack (rain cover touching the ground) to make sure the sides are gripping around the pack. Well, at the second use of this rain cover there's...
I couldn't decide and ended up buying both the XS and S together. I know that the 22L falls within the S size, but I didn't want a loose baggy raincover which might pool water in creases. I also rarely pack my 22L Talon to the brim so I hoped that the XS would be a nice tight fit.
The XS actually fits perfectly, not overstretched as I was slightly worried about. I typically carry a 3L bladder, Ultralight/Watertight .7 med kit, Hyperflow water pump, a 1L sized mesh bag with all sorts of "stuff", Laplander saw, Benchmade Rant, and the inner pocket full of Cliff bars and an external battery. All in all, I would say my Talon is comfortably 50-60% full. The bag isn't bulging but the XS raincover still has room underneath.
I think for my day hike purposes the XS size is perfect. I plan to keep the S sized raincover as well in case I go hammock camping with my Talon. The S raincover should then have plenty of room for a fully stuffed Talon with maybe extra...
The Osprey pack covers appear to be good quality and fit over my Talon 22 pack nicely. Haven't had to use it in the rain yet, but it should work fine.
