MoBG is the third volume in the Otherland saga, and I actually enjoyed it even more than the first two books in this series. Williams combines his usual terrific writing skills with some fabulous visual images of different worlds taken from ancient folklore, such as Egypt and ancient Greece. I especially liked the fact that, while there are many more secrets to be revealed in the final volume of Otherland, some information is finally disclosed to the reader and there is a climax of sorts at the end of the volume. I actually enjoyed the ending immensely, though I can understand if others were mystified by it. Of course, Williams has a Herculean task with the fourth novel, Sea of Silver Light. I counted at least twelve developing subplots without answers yet, and so I'm hoping that Williams doesn't fail to provide a great finish to this powerful and exciting series, as so many other fantasy writers have failed to do in the past. Of course, it goes without mention that you...
I actually liked this one better than the first two because of the increased rate of plot development. Everything start happening really fast toward the end and all the side plots are starting to come together. Some of the questions left by the first two books are finally answered in this one (although this one also presents some new puzzles). And of course Williams intorduces a couple of really intriguing new VR nodes (the endless house and the land of Troy).
There is a heavy sense of desperation for the characters in this third book that wasn't there in the first two. You can really see the increase in the action and a sense of urgency as each of the side plots are approaching their climaxes. The next book promises to be exciting and to be full of unanswered questions.
I highly reccommend this entire series.
After having blazed through volume 2, river of blue fire, I couldn't wait to get my hands on volume 3, and I must say it was worth the wait. Williams expands upon the central ideas of the previous books, keeping the story balanced between Otherland and the real world. In addition to filling in some of the character issues arising from the previous two books, he provides startling new twists and turns. I spent a solid 8 or 9 hours devouring this book, and I cannot wait for the next one. Lush and textured each of the new worlds we discover in the Otherland network presents unique and interesting micro-cultures, as well Williams makes some sly references to other literary and pop culture icons such as Tolkien and Blade Runner. Well worth the read, and a definite level above most of today's formulaic fantasy.
