Additional Information

The Oxford Anthology of Western Music, Volume Two: The Mid-Eighteenth Century to the Late Nineteenth Century, accompanies the late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century portion of The Oxford History of Western Music, College Edition*, by Richard Taruskin and Christopher H. Gibbs (9780195097627). Beginning with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and ending with Giacomo Puccini, this comprehensive volume features forty-four different composers from seven different countries. In addition to offering a number of landmark works, it also provides important pieces that are rarely anthologized, including Niccolo Piccinni's La buona figliuola, Johann Strauss II's "Blue Danube" Waltz, Bedrich Smetana's The Moldau, and Mikhail Glinka's Kamarinskaya. Designed with students in mind, this unique collection includes introductory essays at the beginning of each piece and an index of names and terms. A corresponding set of recordings* (3 CDs) contains musical examples from the anthology in high-quality MP3 format (9780199768295). This anthology is a great musical resource. It was a required book for a class I was taking, but since I actually care about the history of Western music, I keep it around.

I keep it on a bookshelf in my living room. The title sounds pretty ritzy in itself: "Oxford Anthology of Western Music" It shows how refined an individual I am. Bonus!

In all seriousness, The text was an asset in my class. It has scores for sections of many major works, and it's great for making my own arrangements of them. I like to arrange for classical guitar, but most of the pieces aren't written for it. This is a nice thick book of scores I would have spent more on had I bought them individually.

Every piece has a written analysis and a little about the composer, piece, and/or time in which it was written. It gives historical context to every piece, making them more than some notes that a dead white guy slapped down on some lined paper.

TL;DR:

This is a wonderful resource, which adds to the The Oxford History of WSestern Music College Edition which has Cross References throughout. This is Volume Two which covers "The Mid-Eighteenth Century to the Early Ninteenth Century".
Some examples are given in Piano Reduction, while others in "mini Score" Orchestral reproductions.
All have notes before each piece, and cross reference with the Full and the Concise CD tracks -- which are cross referenced throughout the College Edition, which allows anyone interested in Western Music to "see" (and "hear") the rich heritage that has come to be Music as we have it today.
