PARACORD LANYARD: Thanks to our paracord lanyard, you don't have to worry about losing any piece of this fire starter kit. Paracord is strong lightweight, resists fraying and will hold up in the elements. GENUINE MAGNESIUM: Whether you're camping in the middle of nowhere or in your den in the middle of winter, you want your fire starter to work the very first time. Our fire starter features a genuine magnesium rod, which will reliably provide you with the sparks to get your fire going. Magnesium works especially well in wet and damp environments, just the places you'll need to stay warm and dry. FERRO ROD: Ferrocerium is a must of any fire starter kit. Made of a synthetic pyrophoric alloy, ferro sparks easily to get your kindling or foliage-infused tinder lit immediately. No more endlessly hitting a flint in frustration as the sun sets. Simply tap the metal striker on the ferro rod, and light and warmth is only seconds away. 15,000 STRIKES:Those who love the outdoors will love the Alpha Encender. It's rated for 15,000 strikes, enabling you to get a fire going trip after trip. Take it camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, down the trail, up the mountain, and everywhere else you want to roam knowing that a fire is no more than a strike away.-Aspen Ridge Sports Fire Starter -Magnesium -Ferro Rod

Larger and more robust than the usual fire starter "combos" being sold. The Ferro rod is 5/16" diameter and just shy of 2-3/4" long, unlike the usual wimpy 1-1/2" - 1-3/4" long and 3/16" diameter ones found in other fire starter kits. The same goes for the magnesium source, this one is a robust 3/4" diameter rod measuring 3-1/2" long... that's a LOT of magnesium.
I strung on a bunch of "figure 8" spring loaded "shoe lace locks" (also available here on amazon) onto the paracord lanyard.. not only does it make the lanyard less unruly, it adds versatility to the paracord for numerous uses in the field.
My one "knock"... the "hacksaw blade" striker found on the majority of these starter kits. As-is, they don't work well at all to raise sparks from the ferro rod. You need to put the non-toothed back of the striker on a file and give it a nice flat square shouldered edge so it "bites" into the ferro rod... then you'll have sparks galore!
I'd never used a fire starter like this before so I was pretty pumped to try it out when it arrived...
First you scrape some of the black coating off the ferro rod using the saw blade, next shave some magnesium into roughly a dime sized pile onto your primary combustible material (I used a sawing motion as I drew the blade down the magnesium bar), and then finally you flip the saw blade over and use the spine of the blade to strike the ferro rod and BOOM, you just made FIRE! You can't believe how satisfying it is to make a fire this way until you try it - I found immediately I was thinking of all those fools out there buying waterproof matches for camping and tempted to laugh at their folly until I remembered I'd been one of them until very recently.
Overall, I gotta say this is nearly as easy as using a match because it sure doesn't take long at all! I'd always heard starting a fire like this was kind of tough but it seemed like a piece of cake with the...
When I go camping, I always bring a box of wooden matches and a bic lighter inside of a snack sized Ziploc bag. The bag keeps them waterproof and protected. I have never, ever had a need for anything else to start fires with while camping. That being said, when I take my son camping, the whole process of teaching him how to make a fire is as fun as it is educational and therapeutic. For that reason, I've taught him to make fires using various steels, rods and strikers. When this product arrived we went straight outside and got busy - and it did not take long at all before we had a nice little fire going right on the concrete driveway (it's winter here in MN and it was the most opportune spot). Mama bear came home from work and busted us on the driveway, rolled her eyes and went inside the house as me and my son high-fived each other. Very easy to use, lots of sparks, ignited the tinder quickly. Not much more to say other than can't wait to get camping in northern MN and put it to use...
