I have been purchasing Peavey Amplifier Heads for decades including 5150, two 6505+, 3120, and the Ultra way back in the 90's. Peavey Amps are the BEST & built like tanks. Amazing Amplifier head for many playing styles, and the affordable price is just another plus, and out performs other Amps costing many times the price. I have played all the 1960's Blackface amps over span of decades, and this Valveking gets pure "Fender Like" clean tones with it's 6L6's & circuit layout. However, you can dial in mild overdrive to searing distortion without any muddiness. Peavey has improved the genuine spring reverb that sounds very lush & vintage. This amp is very rich in harmonics when properly dialed in, and the versatility is unbelievable. Surprisingly, you can get that sweet spot in the overdrive at lower volumes even though it is a 100 watt Head. With a 4x12 Speaker Cab loaded with (2 Eminence Red Fangs & 2 Eminence Wizards)I have achieved the perfect classic...
This is probably the best tube amp there is, when it comes to dollar-per-watt, useability, and RELIABILITY. I bought this in the 2X12 combo version(which I didn't want, I wanted the head, but it was cheap) and I was really surprised at how well-mannered it was, for a 100W head. No balancing between the 1 and the 2 on the volume knob, to keep the plaster from falling down, you actually get to use the knobs on this without needing ear protection. And it sounds good. A decent overdrive pedal into the clean channel is all you really need, and the reverb sound good, too. If you want to play death metal, raise demons, etc., you could probably do that with the drive channel and a Boss pedal. I don't even use the drive channel, run a Dumble clone overdrive pedal into it and it sounds like a vintage Marshall. It still sounds like a 50 watt plexi on the clean channel(basically what it is), I have it on Class A on the back rotary knob, which helps it from peeling the paint off the...
The Valve King is a pretty straight forward Amp with no onboard effects aside from a Spring Reverb. That's a preference of mine, as the more digital you get the more things tend to glitch and screw up. It's a 2 channel Amp, but the Gain Boost acts as a 3rd channel for metal distortion and leads. I use the presence & resonance controls alot for shaping my tone. Which I believe are a must on any Amp to control range on those frequencies. Also, the texture feature is one of the main reasons I bought this Amp.
Sound: I play all styles of music, with varying Pickups and the Amp handles them well. Most people will have issue with the initial harshness especially with the stock Pre Amp Tubes & unbroken Speakers. But once you have those tubes replaced, her new tone will split your face in half with smiles. Plus the more you crank this beast the sweeter she sounds, a trait of all Tube Amps. Another thing to mention is how Pickup output levels alter the Amp's tone and EQ...
