Additional Information

If Ezra Furman s recent single Restless Year and its stop-motion video wasn't proof enough of his brilliance, 'Perpetual Motion People', his first album for Bella Union, delivers a cascade of memorably bristling hooks driven by a unique splicing of timeless influences, delivered with a restless urgency and combative spirit that shines through in his vocals and lyrics. Having taken his time to work his way into the public consciousness, Furman's time is unquestionably now, as he finally faces an expectant audience hungry for the next stage of his thrilling approach, on record and on stage.

The album was recorded with Furman's current band The Boyfriends - comprising Jorgen Jorgensen (bass), Ben Joseph (keyboards, guitar), Sam Durkes (drums) and saxophonist Tim Sandusky and recorded at Sandusky's studio Ballistico in Furman's home city of Chicago (he's currently based in San Francisco). Sandusky also recorded Furman's last two albums, 'The Year of No Returning' and 'Day Of The Dog'.

'Perpetual Motion People' kicks off with Restless Year , which Consequence Of Sound described as... a ball of energy, bouncing around genre borders with glee. There s the rebellion of 90s indie rock, a string of sunshine-y 80s pop, and the snarl of 70s punk

I caught Ezra's set at Glastonbury 2016 via VPN and was blown away. This album is the freshest most subversive punk(ish) rock I've heard in a very long time. The melodies and song writing are addicting to say the least, and Ezra's voice is haunting and hypnotic. I kind of feel like this record shouldn't exist, or that it should be illegal, because it's just too good, too fresh and ground breaking. If you like to get your socks rocked off, dragged through the mud, and then rocked back on again, pick up this album.
Androgynous cross-dressing observant Jewish singer "Ezra Furman's third album "Perpetual Motion People" is as rich and diverse as his colourful personality.

The rockabilly-tinged "Restless Year" opens the album with an eye catching stop-motion video. "Lousy Connection" starts off retro-sounding doo wop-tinged before veering into horn-peppered Motown territory. "Hour Of Deepest Need" is a country-tinged shuffle, while the stomping "Wobbly" recalls Scissor Sisters.

"I'm sick of this record already" he declares on the ballad "Ordinary Life", teasing obviously as we're not. "Tip Of A Match" is a fuzzy-sounding rocker, "Pot Holes" is bouncy Dixieland-tinged, the Elton John-channelling ballad "Can I Sleep In Your Brain", and closing cut the acoustic "One Day I'll Sin No More" steeped in religious imagery and sounding like an old spiritual.

I was introduced to Ezra through information in Uncut and wonder how I missed out for so long. I would best describe "Lousy Connection" as Jens Lekman lyrics with Willy DeVille musical fearlessness. Like the best albums, you get more with each listen and never settle into that horrible place of knowing what will happen before you hear it. It is a bizarre media reference but I listen to Ezra's music and it has the bawdy and intelligent fun of Elaine Stritch's Broadway show At Liberty.
