Born and raised in Tennessee, Peter Taylor wasÂ the great chronicler of the American Upper South, capturing its gossipÂ and secrets, its divided loyalties and morally complicatedÂ legacies in tales of pure-distilled brilliance. Now, for hisÂ centennial year, the Library of America and acclaimed shortÂ story writer Ann Beattie present an unprecedented two-volumeÂ edition of Taylorâ€™s complete short fiction, all fifty-nine of theÂ stories published in his lifetime in the order in which they wereÂ composed.Â

Volume one offers twenty-nine early masterpieces,Â including such classics as â€œA Spinsterâ€™s Tale,â€ â€œWhat YouÂ Hear from â€™Em?,â€ â€œVenus, Cupid, Folly and Timeâ€ and â€œMissÂ Leonora When Last Seen.â€ As a special feature, an appendix in the first volume gathers three stories Taylor published as an undergraduate that show the early emergence of hisÂ singular style and sensibility.

Volume two presents thirty stories includingÂ manyÂ of his most ambitious works, among them â€œDean ofÂ Men,â€ a monologue delivered by a middle-agedÂ father to his long-haired son about the limits ofÂ idealism; â€œIn the Miro District,â€ a parable of the OldÂ Southâ€™s enduring persistence in the New; and â€œThe OldÂ Forest,â€ one of Taylorâ€™s most celebrated works, the story of a young man who jeopardizes his
impending marriage by consorting with a girlÂ deemed beneath his station.Â Here too are all five of Taylorâ€™sÂ remarkable prose poems, stories in free verse thatÂ demonstrate that great fiction is, at its highest pitch,Â a line-by-line, image-by-image high-wire act. TwoÂ of the stories in this volume, â€œA Cheerful Dispositionâ€ and â€œTheÂ Megalopolitans,â€ are collected here for the first time.
