There seems to be far too much confusion in the hobbyist world about general use of optocouplers and relays (electro-mechanical and SSR types) when controlled by digital designs (Any microcontroller). I put together short write-ups I hope will answer the most important questions, especially 'why won't my microcontroller (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.) get this #$%$@& relay board to work ?!'.

Most commercial and industrial relay boards have, historically, required the control inputs to be able to sink 20 mA to fully turn on an optocoupler, which, in turn, activates an electro-mechanical relay. Programmable Logic (or Ladder) Controllers (PLCs) generally use outputs powered by 12V or 24V power supplies. 5V supplies are never used with these type relay boards. (NEVER !)

Therefore, any relay module designed for 5 VDC power implies that the inputs are specifically able to be controlled by ordinary 5V TTL or CMOS logic level signals that can't source or sink more than... Read more
