The first edition of this, published in the earlier 1960s, was edited by Kenneth Vines (one of my graduate school instructors) and Herbert Jacob. That started an ongoing enterprise. Indeed, I have all but one of the works in this series (some student once borrowed the first edition and never returned it). For most people, this would prove to be an esoteric work--but if you are interested in state politics, this is a treasure.
For one thing, it is pitched such that it can be used as either an undergraduate or graduate textbook. Thus, it is accessible to interested lay, non-political scientist readers.
The current editors, Virginia Gray and Russell Hanson, have continued the tradition of a comparative state politics approach. The volume begins with an essay by Gray, outlining the "socioeconomic and political context" of states. This serves as a general introduction to...
This series began with Kenneth Vines and Herbert Jacob as editors. I actually studied with Vines at the State University of New York at Buffalo. When I took his State Politics class, we read the page proofs for the third edition of this work. I am a fanatic, since I have a copy of all ten editions (this version is the tenth in this series).
The book compares the American states, to get a sense of the dynamics of state politics. As such, this has been a valuable resource for coming up on five decades (the first edition was published in 1965, if memory serves). This edition adds new chapters on the politics of education and higher education policy.

The first part provides context on the socioeconomic and political context of the states and the essence of intergovernmental relations. Then, the dynamics of politics--parties and interest...
Excellent source! The reading is enjoyable and informative. The text was mandatory for a MPA course.
Gray et al, do a fantastic job of pulling together the research and presenting a comprehensive and comparative analysis of politics at all levels within the fifty states. Moreover, you can't help but to appreciate the well-designed glossary, the complete and up-to-date tables and figures, and the maps showcasing comparative data.
