Popular Archaeology's annual Discovery edition is a selection of the best stories published in Popular Archaeology Magazine in past issues, with an emphasis on some of the most significant, groundbreaking, or fascinating discoveries in the fields of archaeology and paleoanthropology and related fields. Popular Archaeology Magazine is the world's most popular exclusively digital archaeology magazine, articles of which are written exclusively for the magazine and written in a format readable by the public by experts doing pioneering work in their fields, and writers and journalists reporting on groundbreaking discoveries and expeditions worldwide. The 2012/2013 edition will take the reader to the amazing discoveries in South Africa that are changing the way scientists are looking at human origins; the discovery and ongoing study of the world's largest trove of ancient writings discovered in Egypt; new archaeological discoveries bearing on the historicity of the biblical kings David and Solomon; excavations in Jordan that may overturn traditional views about the location and existence of the biblical city of Sodom; the discovery and excavation of a great lost city in Colombia, South America; research that is shedding light on who the last Neanderthals were and where they lived; excavations of the oldest known pyramid tomb in Mesoamerica; and much more.

I was interested in most of the articles. These are well written and I also like the way that various archaelogical technical words are explained. One article had links to the web which had photos that could be viewed in relation to the subject matter. But other articles would have been of more interest if they had been illustrated, or photos added. Giving web references for the images is a very good way to substitute the lack and so easy. Pity there was not more of that.
Popular Archaeology fills a niche in bridging the educated general e-reader with the real science of archaeology without succumbing to the sensationalism and circulation-boosting faux controversies of some other publications, especially in its coverage of Syro-Palestinian sites. I applaud the appearance of its Discovery issue.--Nicolae Roddy, PhD; Co-director, Bethsaida Excavations Project.
I have to preface this review by saying I love reading what my friends call nerdy stuff. That being said, I think Popular Archaeology Discovery Edition is great value for money; interesting, informative and great for my short public transport commutes.
