Ike Hamill is known for his horror. This is not a horror novel. It`s a beautifully written novel about a man who has just lost his wife. He doesn`t know what to do with himself. He finds himself alone with adult kids who he doesn`t really connect with and a stray dog that he lovingly (eventually) refers to as the bastard. Life is hard when you suddenly find yourself alone. This story takes us on an unpredictable journey of an old man figuring out who he is outside of another person. It made me wonder (and worry) what will happen to my own parents when something happens to one of them. Mr. Hamill proves once again that he is an author that is not bound by any genre.
I personally didn't like this story at all. To me it made very little sense. John, to me, sounds like some old grumpy man that doesn't like or want people around him. Not even his own children and grandchildren. He gets a stray dog he keeps calling Bastard. Why bother with the dog if you don't like it anyway.
Love and loss were surprise subjects for me from this most talented author, Ike Hamill. I didn't realize how deeply connected I had become with the main character in this book until a good way in, but like anyone who has lost a beloved to death, the grief and denial touched something in me. A most excellent read, one I would recommend.
