This book provides a wonderful mix of projects using wool applique and patchwork quilting. I have loved quilting and appliqueing with wool for a long time and “Primitive Style” combines the two beautifully.

What is primitive style? Jennifer Gaston, the author, says, “To me, it’s an easy, casual style. I like to think of the pioneer woman making things for her home with the materials she could find or that she had on hand. She would applique flowers, animals, or everyday objects on her quilts, or hook them in her rugs. The designs were simple and full of character—in other words, primitive—because she wouldn’t have been a trained artist.” I like this definition because it explains why I love the primitive look. If you make these projects you will have fun and have what I would call "instant antiques". This book is fill with darling primitive style projects that you will enjoy making and then decorating your home with. There are both pieced quilts and applique projects. My favorite is the little sewing kit with darling embroidery. The projects are made with both cotton fabric and wool and include machine stitching, hand stitching and embroidery so you can play around with all sorts of techniques.
I know Jenifer personally. I took quilting classes with her back in the 90's and was a regular customer at her shop from the time that it opened. She has written a wonderful book of primitive projects. It doesn't surprise me. Her attention to quality and her talent for designing creations that feel like home are so well showcased here. I have made hooked rugs and applique projects designed by her and am blessed to have them grace my home and those of friends and family. I am so excited that her talent is out there for the world to experience with the publishing of this book. I plan to make several of the projects. Can't wait to build up my stash of wool again and get started, and I have the perfect fabrics for that basket quilt. Love you, Jeni, and I treasure this book full of cozy folk art projects--PERFECT!
