Hey, I read the other reviews -- two in total at the time. Neither wrote favorably about the film. That was after I had noticed the little box advertisement about the film. The topic of the film intrigued me. Read the two reviews, each helpful in its own way because I concluded if the reviews are that bad the film must be worth something. And I am right.
It is a worthwhile film to watch. Not a film for everyone that I will admit.
If anyone of you have undergone therapy you know its a long boring process if the focus of the therapy is not about yourself. To like this film, I would think, a person would have to be able to engage intellectually in seeing the development of the therapeutic process for each guy and for the surrogate as well.
This documentary is a video recording of therapies of two guys (and of a sex surrogate) who really were desperate about how each was, or each perceived himself was at, failing to connect with women or to make a...
I'm really on the fence about this one. I won't divulge too much of the film, but the narrative quickly becomes something other than what one might expect this to be. The viewer is introduced to two clients at nearly opposite points in their lives. One is a student and the other an older man. We also meet the therapist Maureen Sullivan whose seemingly blase attitude would suggest that she is poorly suited for this line of work.
However, the motives and achievements of each of these three deviates from what is initially presented so that the film becomes more of a social commentary/psychological exploration that it is about the sex. That being said, it also reaches some pretty standard conclusions via some stock characters.
Keep in mind that this movie is 30 years old...I believe most professionals poo poo this type of treatment, preferring traditional psychiatric treatment instead. Nonetheless I found it to be an interesting documentary.
