Since its first appearance the late 1990's, Pro-Ject's Debut range has been a must-buy for an entry-level turntable. In just over a decade, the Debut model has sold several hundred thousand units and has elevated the status of turntables by appearing in museum collections and gracing the pages of high-fashion and lifestyle magazines. Now the Debut Carbon sets a new cost/performance standard with a higher level of build precision, sound quality and aesthetics. The Debut III was a hard act to follow, but Pro-Ject has one again challenged convention by offering even better performance at an easily affordable price. The most profound upgrade is the addition of the 8.6-inch single-piece tube carbon fiber tonearm that increases stiffness while decreasing unwanted resonances, resulting in a higher fidelity presentation of your treasured recordings. Fitted to the carbon fiber arm is a true high-end cartridge, the 2M Red phono cartridge by Ortofon. This arm/cartridge combination is delivers exceptional tracking and recovery of the musical nuance found within the record's grooves. The attractive, resonance-reducing MDF platter supports a heavier 300mm diameter metal platter for smoother rotation and lower wow and flutter. Additionally, a felt record mat is employed for superior record support and coupling. The platter and plinth assembly sits upon four-point O-ring feet designed for energy absorption, and the plinth-mounted motor is isolated by a new SorbothaneTM suspension to keep unwanted noise and vibration to a bare minimum. Plinth-mounted RCA output jacks allow for the use of higher quality interconnects for even better sonic performance. The Debut Carbon is offered in several high-gloss fashion colors and a full-sized hinged dustcover is included.

This is a darned good turntable. I bought it after having an Ion. The Ion was extremely cheap. Pro-Ject is more for the audiophile, and not just for people who want to transfer music to an iPod or other device. The sound quality is exceptional. Way better than the Ion. Especially on the highs. There's no distortion like there is on the Ion. One thing I found odd though is that if you want to play a 45, you have to take the platter off and re-position the drive belt. This would be a real pain in the neck if I had any intention of playing 45's. Also the felt mat that comes with the turntable that sits on the platter is really flimsy. Every time I take an album off the platter the felt matt comes off too. But other than these minor issues, I'd highly recommend the Pro-Ject over the plethora of cheap crappy turntables that are out there.
I got into collecting vinyl earlier this year and my first turntable was the Sony PS-LX300USB. I didn't know what I was doing and I bought it mostly out of convenience (it was carried at my local Best Buy). Overall, it served me well but I always thought the sound wasn't that great. I had been mulling over a turntable upgrade and I was torn between the Audio-Technica LP120 and this guy - as you can see, I decided on the Debut Carbon. This thing sounds absolutely incredible and setup was a breeze. The first record I spun was Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and I was blown away by the clarity and detail in the music. Then I put on the Talking Heads "Speaking in Tongues" and, same thing - the bass was tight and you could hear all of the little nuances in the music. I spent about 4 hours this morning spinning vinyl because I couldn't get enough of that sweet sound. I'm going to stop here because my words aren't doing the experience any justice...
Got this turntable for my daughter who is in college. She loves it. She is getting in to listening to vinyl records. Easy assembly if you watch you tube video, more complicated if you try to follow instruction booklet.
