Additional Information

The Speed box S was designed to provide rock solid performance and automatic Speed change functionality to your ac-powered turntable. You can now easily change between 33 and 45 RPM speeds with a push of a front-mounted button. The quartz-precision frequency regulation and integrated filter circuit give far better Speed stability for smooth and undisturbed motor operation. The small size of the Speed box S also allows you to place the unit on the same shelf as the turntable for easy access. It is compatible with all Pro-Ject turntables that use a 16v(ac) power supply (see list below for exclusions) and can even be used to play 78rpm records with the addition of an accessory pulley available for separate purchase. Compatibility: the Speed box S may not be used with Pro-Ject turntables with a built-in electronic Speed change, a DC power supply, an automatic switch-off, or an integrated phono preamp. (E.G. This unit is a bit pricey. Let's just get that out of the way.

However, it has made my table all the more tolerable with LP's. My Pro-ject Debut Carbon has started to emit the dreaded 60 Hz hum. I've tried many things... applying Dynamat to the bottom of the plinth, applying Dynamat to the motor, installing neoprene washers in the motor set screws, lifing the motor support band off the plinth with closed cell foam strips, placing small pads under the dustover contact points... the noise reduced to probably a third of its original intensity. This box though, made the background virtually silent...all due to the motor turning at a slower rate. That's all that was needed to "fix" the issue. I want to caveat that the issue still exists for 45 RPM records, however I have very few 7"s.

I would buy it just for that reason. As far as stability, I have noticed records do sound better in timing, leading to cleaner bass. The elimination of the hum is the real buying factor... Read more
So I originally went into my purchase of the speed box with the intent of simply buying a really expensive way of not to have to lift the platter on my record player every time I wanted to play a 45. Sure, I read a bunch of reviews online saying that it improved sound quality, but I was really skeptical. Is regular wall power really so "dirty" that we need a separate piece of equipment to "clean" it? And even if we do, would I actually be able to perceive a sound difference in tiny changes in record speed?

Turns out the answer to all these questions is a definite yes. The audio quality improvements are mostly in the lows, but the bass on all my records is now distinctly more crisp and clear. I also seem to be getting fewer pops from my old records, but I might just be imagining that part.

My only complaint is the one that everyone else also has. The power cord to connect this to the record player is super short. Unless you can find a place to buy... Read more
Works great after setting up with reasonably easy directions, my only complaint is the cord you connect the box to your turntable with is ridiculously short making your setup options very limited, especially if you have a cat who likes to chew on cords.
