First of all, I really don't like writing bad reviews. It's my hope that I got a bad copy, given that others seem to enjoy the product. That said, if I had read this review when I was deciding which unit to buy I could have saved myself a bunch of grief. Anyway...
I spent a bunch of time looking around for a good field monitor to use with my Canon 5D Mark III, my primary goal being to find an affordable unit with good focus peaking capability. It's really hard to gauge focus on the smallish built-in screen, and the 5D3 doesn't let you magnify while recording so good luck maintaining focus on moving targets.
I heard good things about the Swivi, but my main concern there was the short, built-in HDMI cable which essentially restricts you to on-camera use. The Lilliput unit seemed to have it all, so I bit the bullet and got this one. Boy was I disappointed.
First, it takes a good 5-7 seconds to receive input when you power on the camera. I've seen...
As a video monitor, this is an excellent unit. We use them for live shoots on 4 cameras to get focus right on HD. The buttons and inputs are easy to select (why can't they make TV's this way!) Simply 4 buttons on the front to choose inputs.
The one problem: I guarantee you will break the matt box shield eventually. Initially I loved the design. The shield folds to protect the screen and shields the screen from light during use. But, the shield resists a little when opening it and when you apply enough force to get it to break the latch loose, you modestly bump against the stops at the top of its travel and instantly break the hinge pins. They are such small plastic, they seem to be almost like mold injection site residue. But when they break, the shield is done. Well, we used grip tape to create a field hinge. Hey, it works.
They must know of the problem, since there is a pictogram warning on the front. But it's not physically possible to prevent the...
If you need a field monitor for your DSLR and can't afford an $800 Marshall or other "professional-grade" monitor, Lilliput is pretty much the only choice. There are others out there in this price range but you'll be settling for lower resolution, fewer inputs, or lack of essential features (like peaking). I've been pretty happy with this one... it's fairly light, the screen is a nice size and the removable shade is great. There's a pretty long delay when you turn the camera on or switch modes from live view to playback, but if you mess with the settings on your camera and the monitor (rather than leaving them on auto-detect) you can minimize this somewhat. Color quality is excellent, and I like the adjustment knobs for brightness, etc., rather than a menu system with up/down buttons (which it also has, but for other features you don't need to access as often). Peaking works great and other features like histogram and magnify are nice too, though I don't use them as much...
