I'm sorry to say that I have to agree with many others who are not happy with this series any longer. It's not that I want the stories to end, but we need some resolutions and changes. The love triangle has gotten to the point of being ridiculous. Mike has been portrayed as a rather 'active' guy where other women are concerned and there is no way I can buy him hanging around for Hannah, who apparently dresses like she is a sixteen year old high school student, and who gives only an occasional hug or kiss. Also, Norman has been married so we know he's not celibate, so I also can't buy HIM just hanging out for years, in love with a fashion challenged celibate woman. There could be many more wonderful stories left in the series if Ms. Fluke will resolve the love triangle and have Hannah dress like a grown-up ( and this does NOT mean pantsuits!) and make the conversations more believable- some of them sound like a beginning writer wrote them! If Hannah and Norman got married I could...
This is my first book in this series and by this author. I will qualify my review by saying I'm more than halfway through the book and wondering if I want to finish it. The recipes are okay but the story seems disjointed. I feel like I missed something at the beginning and even went back to re-read. The book started with one event, a suicide/murder and now moved on another, an attempted murder/accident. Maybe somewhere it will all be tied together. The characters are strange and it feels like the author doesn't care about the them either. Maybe the recipes should be grouped at the end. I find I have to skim through them quickly as they are distracting but then again so is the story. I'll certainly correct my review if this book improves but so far I'm disappointed.
I have to admit that I have read every single one of Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen Mysteries. The characters are like old friends by now. While I was a bit bored this time by all the details about the cats chasing each other and the sort of ridiculous antics of the characters' responses to the cats running under and over the tables, sofas, chairs, etc., the overall story line was one that I thought was one of her best. The reason being was that I had trouble this time figuring out until close to the end who did the deed! I found there was more substance to the overall theme than there has been in some of the other novels. There is also something comforting about the characters. This particular writing had a lot of detail and I also found a recipe for a fruit pie that I really want to try. So, this book gave me a two-for-one bonus. If you want a novel that does not take a lot of thinking and that takes you mind off of everyday troubles, this is a good one for some relaxation...
