This book should be reviewed based on its content, not the media version (i.e., Kindle format). It is fine if you mention problems with the version you purchased, but you should give an appropriate rating for what is really in this book. This book is an absolute classic, not only for researchers that conduct primarily anthropological studies (such as ethnography), but also for researchers who are interesting in using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods in other disciplines. While the book is not necessarily comprehensive in its detail of each and every of these methods, it does provide an excellent introduction, compilation, and very useful applied examples. It has a nice mix of study design and preparation, data collection, and data analysis, along with theoretical underpinnings for various analytic approaches. I can't count the number of times I have gone back to refer to various editions of this book over the past decade to refresh my memory about a certain... Read more
The Kindle edition of this book lacks a Table of Contents, Chapters and Index, making the book unnecessarily difficult to navigate and use. This is a reference book, not a fiction book, which means readers need to navigate content non-sequentially and easily locate a specific section without having to flip through irrelevant sections, which readers are unable to do without a Table of Contents or clearly marked chapters. I am very disappointed. This review refers only to the technical aspects of the Kindle edition, NOT the book itself. The content of this book is outstanding. Until this technical issue is addressed, I recommend that customers purchase the paper edition of this book.
When I first picked up this book for a field methods class, I was expecting the kind of dry writing one comes to expect from most books on research methodology. What I discovered was a conversational style and a slew of anecdotes that helped bring to life the successes and pitfalls of anthropological research. Given his extensive experience in both conducting and writing about field research, Bernard doesn't need me to sell his book. But to all those budding anthropologists out there, fear not, you might actually like reading this one.
