This book is as eye-opening as Gary Taubes' "What if it's all been a big fat lie?" Nothing like reading a well researched and annotated exposure of how health recommendations can be based on nonexistent scientific evidence and disseminated to the masses as healthful advice. I'm still waiting for an apology from the "experts" who had a couple of generations of Americans scarfing up transfats (margarine and crisco) when they would have been better off with the lard and butter Americans used to eat. Now they have finally conceded that transfats are the very worst of all. Oops. Ms. Kolata writes very well, making scientific matters easy to digest for the layman. The medical establishment can't point to a way of eating that results in long term loss of large amounts of excess weight, because none of them do. Of course, all fat people know that. They've lived it. They've lost 20, 30, 50 or 75 pounds, repeatedly. The studies of twins was particularly enlightening. I highly...
This book presents pretty compelling evidence that the billion dollar weight loss industry is not supported by science. Wright is primarily genetically determined, although health is not. You can get and stay healthier your whole life through diet and exercise, but you won't be able to drastically change your weight permanently unless you're willing to make it the focus of your life. It takes energy to constantly fight hunger. A must read for anyone who cares about obesity issues.
Gina Kolata, science reporter for the New York Times, has the unusual journalistic integrity to state something that no one wants to hear: that it is almost impossible for most fat people to lose significant amounts of weight. She takes us through one specific study, and mentions scores of others, as she decimates the claims of the diet industry and so many health professionals. The hard truths she demonstrates are that the great majority of people who do lose a fair amount of weight at some point are not able to keep it off over time, that people who say that obesity issues "need more study" are largely motivated by an unwillingness to accept the conclusions of a vast number of studies already conducted, and that there is tremendous money to be made in giving false hope to the obese. There's a memorable bit towards the end of the book where she shares with a colleague the results of the study she focuses on, and he asks, with something of a sneer, of the participants, "Did they...
