Additional Information

Something lurks beneath the surface of Cooper Lake.

Something hungry. Something intelligent.

Something that preys on those who venture too close to its domain.

The native Indians had a name for it.

ONIARE

In 1939, its victim was a young drifter. Dave Longo fought and killed it then, but it won’t stay dead.

It returned in 1956 to claim the lives of two young men. For Dave, its return was a reunion in Hell.

It's now 2014 and the creature has returned again, but Dave Longo is not around to face it a third time. The task becomes the responsibility of Ryan Lowell, a child the oniare had terrorized back in ’56, but can he overcome his childhood fears to vanquish the oniare once and for all.

This is a very well written, quickly evolving, enthralling and deliciously creepy blend of horror and a mythical creature story. This mythical creature, the Oniare, has haunted the lakes and rivers of Vermont and surrounding locales for eons and takes its victims to spawn its next generation. This telling seamlessly weaves past (perspectives from 1885 and more prominently, 1939 and 1956) and current periods (2014) together and is essentially the story of two 11 year old best friends in 1956 and how they deal with this horror (make no mistake about it, this is not a YA story but one for an adult reader). Along the way, they’re assisted by grizzled veterans who have dealt with prior generations of this creature and lived to tell about it. I rarely read a book that hasn’t been reviewed by at least one reader, so this was a first for me. I wasn’t disappointed, thoroughly enjoyed it and finished in one sitting. A very impressive read!
I really liked this old fashioned, "kids versus the monster" horror story. Picture a huge snake, but with big teeth & arms so it can grab you. It totally creeped me out. The story gets spread out over several generations in a small Vermont town. Not only do "the kids", Ryan & Bran, hunt the monster, but we see how previous townies did the same thing. And each chapter is labeled with a date, so you always know what generation you are reading about. The author does a good job describing the people & the way of life in this small town & the characters are realistic & very likeable.
My one slight gripe is, the monster shows itself to everyone hunting it with very little provocation, so why don't more people see it?
That qualm aside, if you like a good horror tale, I think you will like this book.
Could not put it down! Was so caught up in this story felt like I was living it! Good read!! Fun for me to recognize names and places in this book from the small town in northern New Jersey where the author and I grew up! Great job Dan! Can't wait to read Abandoned!
