The places he reviewed are accurate and interesting. However, he missed So Many small villages that have so much to offer. Even if he did not have the space to describe these places, he could have had a chapter of "off the beaten path" or "hidden gems". We have a house in Lorgues and just within a 50 mile radius are such interesting villages as: Tourtour, Ampus, Les Arc, EntreCasteaux, Fayence, Villecroix, Carces and Aups(with it's truffle festival in the winter).
I am sure one could pick another village and find similar sights worth seeing.
I purchased this book 3 months prior to our travel through Provence and the French Riviera. In addition to the attributes of most of Rick Steves' travel guides such as where to stay, eat, visit etc., this book actually lays down how to make the best of your time through one of the most enthralling places you may visit in Europe. This books actually gives you suggestions on the best way (bus, train, car etc.) to towns, villages, chateaux and wineyards. If you plan of renting (which we thought was the best thing to do), my suggestion is to read and re-read chapters from this book prior to traveling so that you plan your stay, priorities accordingly. You can rest assured that you will have a pleasurable and worry-free trip.
This was very helpful. We were in Marseille staying with friends and then went to Puyricard to stay with other friends. We rented a car at the TGV station in Aix-en-Provence. We drove to Monaco, then to Nice where we spent the night. The next day we took the scenic drive that is recommended along the coast and stopped in Cannes. Then we continued on to St. Tropez where we stayed with friends. This book was perfect for all of these locations and many more. I really liked the history included. It was well worth it.
