What happened in Vegas should stay there, not follow Amanda home, newly wedded to the man who broke her heart.
After celebrating college graduation with her friends in Las Vegas, Amanda St. Claire wakes up with a terrible hangover and a ring on her finger. Her day gets worse when she finds out she's married to rich playboy Blake Worthington—the guy she has loathed the past four years. Amanda convinces Blake to legally terminate the marriage and they both return home like nothing ever happened. That is, until Blake shows up on her doorstep and Amanda has to come clean with her family.
Together for better or worse while the legalities are cleared, Amanda reluctantly plays along, but then the unthinkable happens---she finds herself falling in love with Blake.
Can they overcome the past? Or will it end their future before it even starts?

I started reading about Blake and Amanda after bedtime, thinking, "I will only read a couple of pages and then go to bed." But, the heart trouble of Amanda refusing to acknowledge what she discovers in the first moments of the book drew me on and dragged me through her journey. Sometimes I wanted to smack her for not letting herself see her emotions for what they are. (So did most of the characters in the book, thankfully.)(I think some of the characters almost did smack her.)
Amanda has a plan, and preconceived notions about who Blake is and what she wants out of life. When she wakes up hung-over and married to him her only concerns is getting him out of her life, and getting back to the plan.
When Blake needs a place to stay he comes to Iowa and lives with Amanda and her family while he sorts out his own life and tries to make Amanda fall in love with her. Their courtship is full of ER visits, missteps, and a little bit of Scarlett & Rhett...
In the romance novel genre it earns 4 stars. As literature generally, 3 would be reasonable. There are fun surprises (including the opening scene). Swinton has a good ear for the way real people speak--the language they use is very believable, not overly literary or clever. While not totally prudish (we start with a hungover female protagonist), this is a romance novel with no sex before marriage--a plus. Supportive, close families are celebrated, and the snooty, rich family, though initially stereotypical, gains some dimension by the end.
I have been dying to read this, because I loved her first book and it had a chapter! I loved the premise of Blake and Amanda's love/hate relationship. I spent a lot of time hating how Amanda kept acting! He kissed other girls, so what? They weren't exclusive, do I'm not sure why that was such a big deal? I was more concerned with the number of people he slept with. Yikes! Either way it was a sweet romance and I LOVED the ending! Any chance I can get an ARC of the Makeout Artist? :)
