This is a 4-star lens that gets an extra star for the very low price. I suspect the people who gave it low reviews are not particularly experienced using very long lenses. First, you need a very stable tripod and a good camera head. I have carbon-fiber sticks and a Manfrotto MHXPRO head. Neither of these are the most expensive supports around, but they are far better than what is passed off as "amateur gear." This is a fixed-aperture, fully-manual lens. The best way to ensure sharp focus is to use a DSLR's "live view" function, and then zoom the image to focus on detail. It requires a very light touch, as even with solid support, there is considerable vibration. After you've focused, let the camera settle for a second or two. Use a remote to trip the shutter. When the picture is taken, it should be done with the mirror locked up (live view does this automatically). The vibration of the camera is enough to blur the image, otherwise. I shot some pictures...
I only tried it for lunar photography and liked it very much, you need a heavy duty tripod for this and probably additional mounting systems.
I am amazed at the range! for the price this lens is awesome. remember to buy an adapter ring for your camera. you will definitely need a tripod ..this thing is huge;, think telescope....and a remote will also be helpful. the slightest touch or wind causes vibration...I just got mine today and played with it for 30 minutes and got some amazing shots. each distance had an f/stop associated with it. so it's all manual. make sure your camera is set on M for manual otherwise you get an error message that there is NO LENS.
