In terms of scholarly merit, the book is definitely on the AVOID list. Aicher feels free to make sweeping generalizations and contests current scholarship with absolutely no backing to his commentary. The writing is vapid and Aicher displays a superficial understanding of Roman religiosity. To add insult to injury, the book is riddled with typographical errors which further adds to the evidence that the author is not serious about the subject matter.

It would probably suffice for a layman who has no interest in the precision of details or extremely limited background in the subject matter. I would not recommend this book.
While reading this, Ancient Rome was lifted from time, the new city vanished and I was there. I knew every ruin, every forum, every road, every theatre. It was as if I were really in Rome 2000 years ago. I could hear the voices speaking to me through this book. Ovid at the Circus Maximus telling you how to pick up a woman, Mark Antony at the Forum denouncing the killer of Julius Caesar, Cicero at the same place on the speaker's platform denouncing Antony. I could see Augustus' funeral, or his return from battle, the Ars Pacis being dedicated to him by the Senate, the Vestal Virgins keeping the fire lit in the temple, or for fun, Caligula running on top of the Basilica Julia. Every monument, forum, road, ruin has a story to be told and it is best told by those who knew them best, the Romans themselves. You will finally understand the true Roma. Buy this book.
The format of this book is unique, because it lets the ancients speak for themselves, in extended quoted passages. Whether you know Rome well or are getting interested in it for the first time, this book brings a special experience not offered by other guides.
