If you're into paper-crafting and into Star Trek, well, we've got some great news for you. Star Trek: Build The U.S.S. Enterprise is a book/kit that contains everything you'll need to construct a deluxe paper model of the NCC-1701 that's nearly a full foot in length. Included are 10 perforated template sheets (with foil accents and metallic printing), push-button LED lights, an audio chip that plays the TOS theme, a step-by-step instruction manual and a paper stand for display. Claudio Dias designed the papercraft Enterprise. Also included is a book - penned by noted comic book writer Scott Tipton - that examines the history of the Enterprise across the Star Trek franchise.

To me, this is one of those kits that seemed like a fairly quick build that could be knocked out in a weekend. And that's after opening the box, inventorying the pieces, and taking a quick glance at the instruction manual. And then, after getting into it, I realized that it was going to take a bit more time than I estimated.
The instruction say you'll need string. I'm using sewing thread because I didn't have anything around the house at the time, and I'm glad I am. Anything as thick as what you would usually consider string would have made things difficult. At certain points you thread the string through the model and use it to tie and pull the LEDs into their resting place. You'll certainly need an exacto knife and scissors to trim especially small pieces. And by far the most helpful physical tool has been using a set of hemostat forceps to clamp pieces together.
I started the build the same time I started rewatching DS9 from the beginning on Netflix, and so...
This is one of the worst paper model kits I've ever seen on the market. The package suffers from 3 critical defects that guarantee a very poor looking finished model. First, the paper the model is printed on has a Plasticine coating, which means that white glue and superglue can not maintain adequate adhesion to hold the model together. Second, the printing of the parts is poorly registered with the die cutting of the pages, meaning that parts look they were only 80% printed. Finally, the paper is too thick to bend cleanly along folds, making sure that the model develops odd warps and wrinkles as it is built.
The good news is that you can download the free model that this waste of paper was based upon at the lower hudson valley gift shop. Print the model on proper cardstock, and you will have a great looking model when you are done. You don't get the LED lights or the crappy sound effect, but the lights sold with this model don't come close to anything like the...
