The adjustment side of the watch band is threaded through the adjustment side of the buckle, by lifting up the top of the retainer the band can pass through to the desired length, the band can be hooked on the small pillar and the top clipped down over the band to hold the correct length. Simply press the two sides together on the back of your wrist with the excess length of strap aimed at the retention loops on the buckle side of the band to close. When closed the deployment mechanism of the buckle is essentially invisible.
