I've been an ACT! user for about a decade. I have upgraded as each new product came out and suffered with the sale of the company from one company to another.
It has been with Sage for a few years now. It has gotten more stable over time. The paid support (It was $200 then.) was almost a necessity in years gone by. Sometimes you would get people in the states and sometimes you would get India.
In the last couple of years, I have just paid per incident. They charged $45 and with the low number of problems we had, that fit.
We upgraded to ACT! 2012 Pro with the ACT! Connect. Finally, I could get at my information on line and onto my iPhone without having to dance through Outlook.
Then the system memory deleted my user name and password. I couldn't find where I had put it so I hit the 'Forgot Password' button. Nothing happened. Tried repeatedly over the course of 24 hours. No luck.

I've been using Act! since the late 1980's, way before it was owned by Sage. It used to be a wonderful CRM system, but Sage took a great product and absolutely destroyed it! I'm using the 2011 version, and we've been having terrible problems with it. Aside from a LOT of really annoying things, the Sage customer support is horrible. They're telling me the problems are due to Microsoft's SQL server base and to call them for help. We've wasted way too many hours trying to deal with this. My feeling is that if Sage made the decision to use SQL server for their product, then THEY should work with us to get things fixed! As it is, I've lost over 2 months of notes, callbacks and alarms. I can no longer get the program to open on my desktop computer, and have to go back and forth between my desktop and laptop - an incredible pain in the you-know-what. I'm finally making the break after 25 years, and moving all my data to a new platform. This one is the PITS! BEWARE
I've had a different experience with this software than others. Its one of the few PC based client management softwares you can buy...everyone else is 'in the cloud' and extracting annual fees for renewal.
Pros: Type in your zip code on their website and you can find certified act trainers in your area to help with on-site install and customization. I ordered the CD-ROM version and it installed flawlessly on Windows 7. I paid for an ACT trainer to visit for an hour+ to customize fields and work out some bugs. Sage supplies 30 days worth of free phone support after the install. Tech phone calls are answered promptly and the techs know their stuff. The community online forus is active, with certified ACT trainers providing responses within 24 hours. Back-up is easy and the software is rich with tools and options. Ideal for small businesses. I'm 60 days in, using just the basic features, and no complaints.
