I bought the stands for KEF LS50's and have been very happy with the performance upgrade. The stands are stylish and very sturdy-especially with the carpet spikes. The only complaint I have is with the the note that they can be filled with sand. What isn't noted is that the vertical supports have a cap welded on both ends. The cap has 3 tiny holes where you pour in the sand, but the emphasis is on tiny! My recommendation is that you get the finest grade play sand you can find--after trying several brands, the only one that would work was Quikrete play sand. You then have to meticulously pour in the sand at a slow rate. In other words, a giant pain. I'm still not convinced it added a lot to the performance, but it's done. So, if you're buying these solely because they can be filled, make sure you only intend to use play sand (versus shot, kitty litter, etc) and you're ready to invest the time. Otherwise, these are great stands.
Nicely built and sturdy. Had ordered the Sanus basic series from another retailer and found the quality to be much lower and the materials a bit lightweight and flimsy. Returned them because of the quality and also parts missing fro the box. On these stands my speakers seem to have a bit more detail and a bigger soundstage. Look good too. Using Blu-Tack to keep the speakers (Wharfdale Diamond 220) nice and stable.
Filled these with sand and that seem to dampen vibration and made them sturdier. Here is my technique that made it easy: -Get finely ground (sandbox) sand. The stuff for concrete mixing has a lot more pebbles. Not expensive and available at my chain home improvement store. -Build the stands except for the top plate. -Use the cardboard tube from a toilet paper roll which fits perfectly on top. -Put the stand in a container (plastic box worked) to catch your spills. Do it outside if possible. -Fill the tube about 2/3 with sand and then...
The other reviews do a nice job of positively covering these speaker stands. They are heavier and more solid looking/feeling then they look on-line. Really, I would give these stands 6 stars if I could. I was planning to fill with sand, but they are heavy enough that I don't see a need, frankly.
The external finish is nice and the overall look really matches my system (whatever that means ... I looked at stands for a long time and these exceed my expectations).
An earlier reviewer comments on the difficulty of lining up the top and bottom plates and he is correct - his tip of laying them flat before tightening the bolts was a great tip. I would add to that: lay everything out on a workbench or counter top and start each of the four bolts, one at a time. Then, with the stand lying on its side, tighten each bolt a bit at a time, like putting changing a tire on your car, and everything will line up perfectly. Make sure you have a nice carbon tipped phillips...
