Pros: Solid device. Cosmetically flawless. The color and material match my MacBook perfectly. The ports all appear to function. Pass-through charging works fine.
Cons: Something I noticed that is not specifically pointed out in the product description is that the pass-through USB C charging port works ONLY to power the MacBook. It does NOT pass data through the USB-C port (such as from my USB-C to Ethernet adapter) or charge devices in the other direction (such as my Galaxy which I connect to my computer with a Micro USB to USB C cable). This is a bit irritating and disappointing, especially as it isn't pointed out in the product description.
The hub is also a little wiggly when plugged in. This isn't a product flaw, but rather something that you've got to expect. The thing's being held to the side of the computer by a single connection - of course it'll wiggle a little. Not a con, just something to be aware of when using.
I bought this hub because it offered a combination of connections that suit my needs. I wanted to be able to read SD cards from my camera and be able to connect an outboard hard drive or memory stick.
I matches the color of my MacBook and connects solidly. The performance seems to be good.
There are a few caveats. I bought the hub along with an Urban Armor case. They are shown together on an Amazon page as "frequently bought together." The may be bought together, but they cannot be USED together because the thickness of the case prevents the hub from plugging in to the computer. Not Satechi's fault. In fact, the fit without the case would not be good if the connector was a little longer.
I also have an Apple adaptor the provides a charging port an HDMI port and one USB 3 port. Not as versatile as the Satechi. I guess I'll be taking the case on and off a lot.
I have read that a reviewer had an SD card damaged by the hub. It...
I was really high on this device when I first got it, but the cons became clear immediately. The device gets ridiculously hot whether you're running power into it through the type-C pass through port or not. The SD card slot requires me to put the SD card in upside down (bizarre) and it's kind of hard to get out. It's hard to unplug anything without risking unplugging the whole dongle. On top of that the build quality is suspect and mine has already become separated from plugging it in and out.
I just tried to use it before writing this review and it actually won't do anything but send power through. Awful.
TL;DR version Pros: 1) Beautiful aesthetic that matches rMB 2) Small size 3) All the necessary ports
