The seventh volume in baritone Matthias Goerne's superb Schubert lieder series features some of the composer's most famous and beloved songs, including the title work, the dramatic and powerful Erlkonig. Joined here by the acclaimed pianist Andreas Haefliger, Goerne offers performances that are rich with the deep colors and intense emotions that are synonymous with the Romantic era. Selections include Im Abendrot, Der Wanderer, An den Mond, Auf der Bruck and Die Forelle.

As he's aged, the nap on Goerene's famously velvet voice has worn off only a bit. In 1997 he released a Schubert album with Andreas Haefliger, and when you compare the overlapping songs, the passage of sixteen years hasn't appreciably affected his voice. In fact, I like this Goerne better. In "An de Mon" D. 259, one of the duplicated lieder, the earlier singer relies on the production of beautiful tones too much for my taste, as if he knows that audiences lick up melted chocolate. Today Goerne is more inward, and the words mean more. In Erlkonig, another repeat, Goerne works hard the first time around to dramatize the voices of father, son, and Erl King, but the effect is too histrionic. The remake is more direct and powerful, and once again the words now mean more.
Beginning as a much acclaimed young baritone, Goerne has matured into a great lieder singer, acquiring the artistry, feeling for text, and connection with the listener that were the hallmark of prior greats...
Goerne has for long been one of my favorite singers. Have heard him many times (London, Chicago, Bath), and not only does he have one of the most beautiful voices singing today but he is also a supremely great artist. While he may not be as wide-ranging an artist as Fischer-Dieskau (one of his teachers) Goerne is, in these songs, his match.
This recording was a perfect introduction to German lieder. The baritone voice was just right for the German lyrics and the piano was a strong supporting element, emphasizing drama and other emotions. Unfortunately, I liked the baritone voice so well, I might be spoiled for lieder sung by sopranos or tenors!!
