Additional Information

A tiny bird. A giant discovery. It's rare to find a modern-day mystery concerning the location of a bird's nest, but until the 1970s, no one knew where the marbled murrelet laid its eggs. The little bird seemed to live entirely at sea. In this exquisitely illustrated book that won the Science Books & Films Prize for Excellence in Science Books, Joan Dunning presents the amazing story of the marbled murrelet based on dramatic facts uncovered in the last few decades. Focusing on one pair of murrelets and their newborn chick, the author reveals the hidden nest in the canopy of the old-growth forests and the secret life of these birds before their fledgling sets off for the sea.

Well….. I have to admit that I am the author and the illustrator of this book. Its subject is the marbled murrelet, a tiny seabird that nests in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest. Once plentiful, these robin-sized seabirds are endangered and almost extinct in the lower 48 states. As a result, they have been used as an "indicator species," that is: a species that indicates that too little of a given habitat remains to sustain life, not just of that species, but of the whole ecosystem! I adored painting the illustrations for this book, which are done in oils. I felt like I was sitting on a limb of an ancient redwood observing life through the eyes of a tiny, solitary chick, left alone by its sea-going parents who dutifully return morning and night for a whole month to feed their chick tiny, silver sardines and anchovies. The marbled murrelet is mysterious and fascinating. It took white people 200 years to even figure out that these birds were nesting... Read more
Growing up in the redwoods of the California Coast I heard about these amazing little birds, but had never read much about them. This book, illustrated with rich, cool, soothing pastels from front to back, is not only great for kids - who will learn about the life cycle of the endangered Marbled Murrelet - but also for adults. Small insets contain more adult-oriented facts about the bird, it's habits, and its habitats, making this book an enlightening experience for both parents and their own "chicks." The connection between these seagoing birds and the old growth forests that provide their nesting habitat is clearly drawn both in words and the illustrations, but the book also provides a narrative about an individual family of Murrelets raising their chick hundreds of feet up in a redwood tree. At a time when many children are raised in suburban homes with little contact with the wilderness, this is the sort of book that brings a bit of the wilderness to the child.

This is one of the most beautiful, informative and captivating children's books I've come across. It does more than just tell the story of a pair of marbled murrelets and their chick. It conveys the author's excitement about these elusive birds and the mystery of their lives at sea and in the canopy of the old growth redwood forest. The exquisite illustrations illuminate the text and tell a story on their own. Readers of all ages (and even pre-readers) will appreciate it. I showed the pictures to my 18-month old grandson and we were both entranced!
