I loved Molly O'Keefe's Crooked Creek Ranch Trilogy (Crazy Thing Called Love, Can't Hurry Love, Can't Buy Me Love), so I jumped on this short novel when it was on sale. I normally don't read many historical romances, but since I knew I'd love the writing, I made an exception.
This story takes place just as the Civil War is ending. Melody and her sister, Annie, are traveling with Melody's violent, murderous husband, Jimmy. Before the war, they were actually well-to-do, the daughters of a doctor. Now, they've lost everything, and they live in fear of the next beating from Jimmy.
Jimmy drags them to the cabin belonging to Steven, the man he thinks betrayed him, with the intent to kill him. Steven's brother, Cole, finds them and Jimmy is taken care of. Cole had thought Steven was dead from the war and they have a nice reunion. The two brothers and two sisters end up staying in the cabin and attraction builds between Melody and Cole. A lot happens in the 3 weeks that comprise the whole of this short story. Feels rushed. These people had some interesting qualities that could have made for some better dialogue and action. While the emotions are there, they fall flat in some weird way. The romance (or seduction) is unconvincing to me. The timing of the sex just grated on my nerves. The writing is okay. I was more interested in Annie and Steven. May read their story when it comes out. Perhaps it will be full length.
Classic Molly O'Keefe. This book is emotionally intimate exploring the cost of moral ambiguity after the Civil War. With the country in ruins, people engage in behavior that they never would've dreamed of prior to the war. Those kind of choices changes people. It changed both Melody and Cole, two strangers who meet under dubious circumstances at the homestead of Cole's brother, Steven. Both have erected walls around their hearts guarding them from really feeling the world after suffering so much just to survive. Ultimately, this is a book about coming alive again through the small things - recognizing beauty, experiencing joys, and seeing life grow anew. Beautiful. Like I said, classic Molly O'Keefe.
