Additional Information

P.T. Deutermann's World War II navy series began with the award-winning Pacific Glory, followed by the brilliantly reviewed Ghosts of Bungo Suido. His new novel Sentinels of Fire tells the tale of a lone destroyer, the USS Malloy, part of the Allied invasion forces attacking the island of Okinawa and the Japanese home islands.

By the spring of 1945, the once mighty Japanese fleet has been virtually destroyed, leaving Japan open to invasion. The Japanese react by dispatching hundreds of suicide bombers against the Allied fleet surrounding Okinawa. By mid-May, the Allied fleet is losing a major ship a day to murderous swarms of kamikazes streaming out of Formosa and southern Japan. The radar picket line is the first defense and early warning against these hellish formations, but the Japanese direct special attention to these lone destroyers stationed north and west of Okinawa.

One destroyer, the USS Malloy, faces an even more pressing issue when her Executive Officer Connie Miles begins to realize that the ship's much-admired Captain Pudge Tallmadge is losing his mind under the relentless pressure of the attacks. Set against the blazing gun battles created by the last desperate offensive of the Japanese, Executive Officer Miles and the ship's officers grapple with the consequences of losing their skipper's guidance―and perhaps the ship itself and everyone on board.

Vividly authentic, historically accurate, and emotionally compelling, Sentinels of Fire is military adventure at its best, by an author whose career as a Navy captain informs every page.

SENTINELS OF FIRE is military historical fiction of the best kind.
It is about a US navy destroyer, the " Mallory" which is on radar picket duty off Okinawa during the onslaught of Japanese kamikaze attacks. The story of the ship, it's officers and men as the relentless attacks wear them down makes for exciting reading. This is a war novel full of extreme violence and death. There are no interludes of R and R in Hawaii for tales of love and frolic. It is about very young men who are afraid but perform their duty, about men who break under unimaginable pressure and about men who order other men to certain death and face responsibility.
The whole Greatest Generation thing was and is not overdone. Not at all.
This is as true to life fiction as can be written.
I recommend it to anyone who reads military history and fiction. The book is not overly filled with jargon, swearing or gore. It is filled with those things which made Americans proud and grateful. Or used... Read more
In the spring of 1945, Japanese Imperial Navy ships rest on the Pacific sea bed, rusting relics of an ill-conceived war. All that stands between the home islands and Allied naval forces are kamikaze aircraft - the Devine wind - and a few remaining submarines. By early April, United States Army and Marine divisions have landed on Okinawa, intent on securing the large island for an air base in preparation for an invasion of mainland Japan. At sea, surrounding Okinawa, American destroyers, cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers support ground operations. In response, the Japanese launch waves of suicide bombers against the imposing fleet. Reporting aboard the Gearing-class destroyer USS Malloy, newly appointed Executive Officer Connie Miles is about to face the most challenging two months in his naval career. In a story reminiscent of Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny, Deuter-mann places ordinary men in extraordinary situations where time is often measured in seconds and the difference... Read more
Everyone's heard of the Japanese kamikaze planes, but this novel makes it real. Almost half of the 12,000 Americans killed in the Battle of Okinawa were American sailors. The horrors posed by the suicide bombers become very real in the tale of naval strategy and bravery. The story has everything. There's an unlikely hero transplanted from a carrier to be XO of a destroyer. Besides the ferocious enemy of Japan, there is the sub-plot of the understaffed radar picket line 50 miles from Halsey's fleet of carriers and battleships. Why can't they spare a few more tin cans? We're dying out here! I lost some sleep finishing this one, and consider it time well spent. You won't regret taking this one up.
