Guido Calabresi (former dean of Yale School, US Court of Appeals 2nd Circuit) once referred to Marshall Shapo as the "Babe Ruth of torts." The man understands what he is doing.

There are lots and lots of approaches to teaching/understanding torts, and this one covers common law, policy, doctrine, and major statutes (workers' comp, FTCA, etc). Essentially, the tools you need to win a lot of cases. This book works incredibly well with Shapo's text book.

If you want an in-depth analysis of the duty/proximate cause issue, this is one of the best. He explains concepts in plain English, gives policy considerations on both sides of the issues, touches on economics, and gives lots of cases for support. His list of factors courts use in deciding issues is as close to exhaustive as I have found. This hornbook also has a great section on products liability.

Great help for my studies.
I can't give you any feedback on how this book would work for a different type of torts course, but it was utterly worthless for my purposes. Professor Shapo is brilliant, but nothing in the book was applicable to the class I took, where "fairness" was referred to as "the F word," and where you'd always get the question wrong if you made a reference to fairness or justice (as opposed to saying something about deterrence, for example). I read this hornbook to prep for the exam and only ended up confused because it talked about fairness a ton, and that's not something that was discussed in my class, ever. The book is well-written, though, and would probably be great for a torts class that deals with fairness as a principle goal of tort law.
